When half a million pounds has just been spent on a play park in the most dangerous part of Afghanistan, the Helmand province, it seems unbelievable that front line troops have been without fresh food for over 40 days now, with no sign of any arriving in the near future. It seems British taxpayers money is being a little mis-spent.
Thank goodness for the food processing industry and packaging machinery! Our troops are, at least, able to eat freeze dried food. This has developed over the years due to the necessity for feeding troops in remote areas and has got increasingly more nutritious and tastier with the use of preservatives, artificial sweetners and flavourings.
There are concerns that packaged food is not as good for us as manufacturers will have us believe. With more fat and calories and less nutritional value than fresh food, is the convenience really worth the extra price tag that comes with it?
Virtually any food can now be processed and made ready for shipment with the use of packaging machinery. Soldiers are then able to take this food out to the front line with them, it can be stored easily and even carried on their person for emergencies. It will last many years if left unopened without losing any nutritional value.
The space programme has also led to new initiatives in the processing of food with new considerations being taken into account such as limited use of liquids. Packaging machinery has come into its own in the aspect of space travel. Packed for ease of storage and disposal, so many types of food are now available for the astronaut that they are able to have a diet very much like the one they would follow at home, albeit with added calcium to keep their bones strong in the weightless atmosphere.
A wide variety of foods for astronauts are put through the packaging machinery from ice cream, meat and juice to yoghurts, cheese and eggs and even liquid salt and pepper.
Of course, food preservation is not a new thing. It has been implemented since the beginning of man with sun drying and smoking to preserving meat with salt. The advent of the refrigerator is a relatively recent thing but until then man has found other methods of food preservation. And since the advent of the refrigerator, the marketing of processed food has been aimed at the busy wife and working mother for convenience.
In this day and age, where everybody is looking for speed and convenience, food packaging machinery has been a godsend. We simply pick up ready-made food, conveniently packaged and have all the nutritional benefits including calorific values listed for us.
Of course, manufacturers always like to make full use of every potential advertising opportunity and packaging machinery is full of brightly coloured, eye catching packaging for every food product on the market.
Advertising campaigns can be geared towards certain target groups depending on what product is packaged. Brightly coloured packaging, often sporting cartoon characters are used to entice children into badgering mum and dad for a particular item. Supermarket own brands at discount prices have the simplest packaging and basic, green packaging is often used to symbolise healthy, organic foods.
Of course, packaging itself has come under scrutiny with the ongoing concern over pollution and global warming. Most packaging machinery is now set up to use environmentally friendly packaging that is bio-degradable or reusable.
Whatever the needs of the consumers, manufacturers or environment, it would seem packaging machinery technology is capable of keeping up.
