Viewed from different angles, one can see bubbles coming out from under the car, the hood, the trunk and any other openings. These bubbles indicate water seeping into all available spaces inside the car. Seeing this, one could grasp a picture of how big a water damage restoration program for that car would be.
For big production outfits willing to drown a high-end sports car in a lake, they would not even bother with water damage restoration. It is part of the budget anyway. However, for ordinary people in real life, it would be a different case. Owners of such vehicles would attempt, using any means possible and within their budget, to try to make a recovery of their car. If this were the case, the owner would need to perform the following water damage restoration techniques.
First consideration should be to remove all water soaked materials that are not metal or are not intrinsic parts of the car. An integral part of water damage restoration is to check which water-soaked item should be discard or not, and which is to be recovered. This includes the upholstery, carpeting, padding, and anything inside the trunk and glove compartments. Carpets and padding should be discarded to avoid possible mold infestations in the future. Upholstery can be cleaned with strong detergents and dried by air blowers. If dehumidifiers are available, particularly those with thermal adjustment capabilities, these can be used to dry out the water-soaked materials. Other items can be left out in the sun to dry, after thoroughly cleaning with bleach and detergents.
The seats should then be removed and dried separately. The foam and stuffing should be replaced, particularly for older cars, which have organic materials in their seats. This is needed to avoid mold infestations that attack organic materials. Later model cars utilize synthetic materials so cleaning and drying would be sufficient.
The side panels and other plastic trimmings should be detached and laid out to dry. This is needed to check for pockets of water still within this panel. Do not dry them out under the sun as this can result to deformation in the plastic and possible cracking. Air-drying would be a more viable drying method for water damage restoration of these parts.
The engine should be thoroughly checked by a qualified mechanic, or by the owner themselves if they are mechanically savvy with their vehicles. Water could seep through and penetrate the interior of the engine, and would cause corrosion to the metal. The oils should be removed using flushing chemicals. This is to ensure all possible dirt from the water is removed. If the car has been submerged in water for a long time, there would be no choice but to overhaul the engine and ensure no water damage occurred in the interior.
Another important item to check during water damage restoration is the electrical and computer systems. The battery should be removed and check separately for water damage. The fuel injectors, ignition coil, and control modules should be replaced. The wiring harness should be checked for any corrosion to the wires, and should be replaced as necessary. All other electrical parts like lights, motors, fuses and other items should also be checked and replaced when required.
Water damage restoration for a car is a daunting task indeed. Professionals would advise replacement, for improperly restored cars might pose some problems in the future. Still, anyone whose car sits in the bottom of a lake would still consider and try restoration techniques for that car, unless he is the movie producer.
