If you live in an apartment building, do you know if the building has fire escape stairs, and are they still in good shape? If you don’t think that they look like they would hold your weight or the weight of several people, you might want to go to your apartment manager and tell him to get a hold of the landlord to have him come and look at them.
These stairs are there for you to use in case of a fire, but if they won’t hold a lot of people who might use them to escape a fire, then they need to be replaced or fixed. In a high-rise apartment, these would make the difference of you making it out or losing your life. It is also a good idea to have a back up plan in mind in case these stairs can’t be reached.
Fires in these kinds of buildings are usually worse than a regular fire because of so many different ways for these fires to be able to start. You have so many appliances, power cords, electric wires, and such big water heaters that are needed to heat the water and also so many gas furnaces. There are also a lot of electric heaters that would be needed to run this apartment building that the costs to replace everything that was destroyed by this fire would be devastating to all of the renters and the owner. In this case, you want to have very good renters insurance.
If you have a real fear of being caught in a fire and you live on one of the upper floors, you might want to see if there is something opened on one of the lower floors and if there isn’t, then you might want to see if you can find another place to live. There are really people that have these gut feelings about something that might happen to them, or they might believe that a dream they had is a warning that something bad is going to happen in the near future.
No matter where you might live and what kind of home you live in, you always need to have a plan of escape because you never know what could start a fire or when or where it might start. Remember to always put you and your family first before anything else. Set up a meeting spot so that you and your whole family can meet there in case of an emergency. Make sure that you and your family leave at the same time or as close in time as possible.
