How discouraging it can be when you have carpeting or rugs that you really love and have one that gets a horrible stain that you are sure you will not get to come out. Usually the first thing we do can be the wrong thing and then our worst fear of having to live with or cover the stain for years to come just might become reality.
When you get a stain on any carpet or rug, the first thing to do is to not panic .Rushing to wet a stain and apply a cleaner might not be the right thing for every stain. Different stains can require different cleaners, different cleaning tools, and different cleaning tactics.
There are some stains, as we all know, that are more difficult to get out than others. Some of these stains are coffee, tea, wine, juices, ink, and some pet stains. These stains should never be rubbed into a carpet or rug further. First of all, as soon as possible, blot up as much of the spill as you can with terry cloth or some other absorbent material.
Next, pour club soda on the stain, no more than necessary, and let it sit for a couple of minutes. Blot the stain until it is gone and if necessary repeat the process. If this does not work, clean the spot with a little liquid detergent and water. Blot again.
If this does not work you can try either vinegar mixed with warm water and blot again. As a last resort, use hydrogen peroxide and let it set for several hours and blot it again. Hopefully one of these procedures will work for you, if not call a professional.
Carpet stains that do not have as much potential to permanently stain should be more easily removed. Use a liquid detergent and mix it with warm water. Rub the stain thoroughly, perhaps using a scrubbing brush, and then blot the stain as dry as you can.
If even lighter stains are being stubborn, try the vinegar solution or hydrogen peroxide. In most cases spots can be removed. If you are really nervous about trying to remove a large stain, like a spilled ink bottle or paint, go ahead and call a professional.
Calling in a professional who will probably be able to fix the carpet will be a lot cheaper in the long run than attempting it yourself and ending up making it worse.
