Of course, the first thing you need to decide is what exactly you want to do. Do you still want to work for an existing company as a home working employee? Do you have an entrepreneurial flair and have a great idea for a business you can run and profit from at home? Many women find success working from home as freelance website designers, assistants, consultants and writers. Additional options include running errands, being a child minder or even tutoring. If you know you want to work from home but do not have a clue what to do, try asking friends and family for ideas. They can even help you market your business in the future.
Working from home requires dedication, commitment and focus. Whilst many fantasise about working from home, for many it is something they simply cannot do. If you like putting things off, you will find it hard to be a successful home worker. You need dedication and most of all, discipline if you want to succeed. Do you like to be praised for a job well done? You will not be getting any of that if you work for yourself! Like to see immediate results and immediate payment? Unlikely you will be getting any of that if you work for yourself!
Working from home will cost you money in the short term as you get yourself set up. You need to work out how much money you need and where it will come from. Of course, some career choices will need more of a financial investment than others. The more time you can invest in your home business, the better. Do not expect to be able to stick to the rigid 9 to 5 hours you are used to. Remember that in addition to actually getting your work done, you also need to spend time marketing, promoting and advertising your new business. Again, you can lean on friends and family to help you out here by passing the word amongst their contacts.
Prepare for the waiting game if you choose to work from home. Work may not come instantly, and when it does it will often come in waves. At times you will have hardly anything to do, but remember this happens to all businesses. Being quiet is not necessarily a reflection of your failure, but it is important to use downtime effectively. Use it to promote yourself and your business. Believe in yourself and what you can achieve. Use friends and family for support and make sure you reward yourself when you are doing well.
