One Small Step For Man, One Giant Leap For Sunglasses
Topics: sunglasses
Leaps and bounds have been achieved in sunglasses technology over recent years.
The first vision aid came about around 1000ad and was a simple glass sphere laid on top of the material to be read, magnifying the writing or pictures. This soon developed to the first wearable vision correction glasses in Italy in 1284. Looking like a pair of angled handcuffs, fashion victims will be thanking their lucky stars that things have moved on since then.
It wasn’t until 1752 that anything resembling modern day sunglasses emerged. With green or blue tinted lenses, these were more in aid of correcting vision problems than protection from light. Sam foster of the Foster Grant company sold the first ‘proper’ pair of sunglasses in 1929, popularising sunglasses rapidly.
Advancements in protective eyewear have made giant steps since the NASA space programme. Astronauts, once outside earth’s protective atmosphere are very susceptible to ultra violet radiation damage to their eyes and bodies.
Space station crew members are more likely to suffer than space shuttle astronauts given their time of exposure. Measures are being carried out by NASA to protect their staff including extra shielding to the sleeping quarters and galleys where they spend most of their time. They are also now provided with top quality sunglasses with the highest UV protection possible.
This is because NASA have found an increased number of astronauts, current and retired, are suffering from cataracts – a direct result of UV damage from the sun. Studies are continuing into the problem so that they can understand more about the different types of cataracts and their progression. This will have the knock on effect of increasing awareness to all sun worshippers and the NASA technology will be passed on to sunglasses manufacturers for our benefit.
Add to this the technology of light polarization and who can be without a pair of sunglasses. The first cellophane type polarizing filter was patented in 1929 by Edwin Land. Polarization filters can be added to sunglasses for the purpose of filtering horizontal rays of light, responsible for glare. This technology makes polarizing sunglasses perfect for fisherman and hunters, allowing them to see through water when normally only reflected light would be seen.
Sunglasses are very much a fashion statement these days but without them there would be many more incidents of cataracts and severe eye damage and blindness occurring. Good quality sunglasses now come with 99% or 100% UV protection – anything less is just not worth having. With our global warming problem on the increase, they are definitely a year round accessory and they do not have to be costly either.
Various colours are now available with optical experts recommending brown, amber or green for the best protection. Do not assume the glasses that are completely black are completely resistant. Always read the label.
Sunglasses come in various sizes, styles and colours to go with the current fashion. Just remember this year that huge, black sunglasses that resemble fly eyes and are bigger than the faces of some of the wearers, are so last year.
