One of the more complex tasks of water removal in an aftermath of a flood is restoring your car to its pre-disaster conditions. Whether parked in a garage, or on the streets, there is a chance that excessive water may have gotten inside your car, the engine bay or even the gas tank. If that’s the case, then your car will not run, and further damage to the engine is possible if the tank is not cleaned properly by immediate water removal.
If water managed to enter the gasoline tank, then it will sink to the bottom of the tank, since it is heavier than gasoline. This is both bad and good. It is bad because most cars have fuel systems which place the gasoline pump’s intake at the bottom of the tank. So if you start the car, not even realizing you have water in your tank, the water will sucked in through the pump, and pushed all the way through pipes and hoses to the fuel injectors, then to the combustion chamber.
This is when you will realize that you have a problem. By then, there is an amount of damage which has already taken place and you need t o do a quick water removal from your vehicle. Water causes steel to oxidize, causing disruptive particles of rust blocking pipes, hoses, or injectors. This may occur at a later segment of the fuel system, way after the fuel filter, which usually catches waste prior to going to sensitive parts of the engine. The good news is, since the water is the bottom of the tank, it is possible that you can drain the tank from a waste gate welded to the bottom of the tank. While this is good enough for the water removal from the tank, it will not help in draining out the water which is now sitting in the rest of the fuel system.
A conventional way for water removal from your car’s fuel system is to take it to a mechanic, where you will take the entire fuel system as part, and dry it piece by piece. While this is the most effective way of water removal, it means you’ll have to tow your car to the mechanic, endure some wait, and pay a significant amount of money as this job may take a few hours to finish.
A more creative way for water removal from your car’s gasoline tank is to use a chemical which binds to water, hence acting as an agent to allow the water to mix with the gasoline and burn through the engine. There are some commercially available products which claim they will do that for you. But the good news here is you don’t have to pay through the nose for these expensive products.
Chances are you have a very effective chemical that would the same job, right in your medicine cabinet. Rubbing alcohol, Ethanol, is not only available cheaply at drug stores, but it is one of the most effective water-binding agents. The theory goes, if you add alcohol to your water-tainted gasoline tank, it will “search” for water, and bind itself to it and eventually dissolving within the fuel mixture in the tank. This really works.
There are some caveats which need to be observed. Ethanol, or rubbing alcohol, is an erosive agent. This may damage your fuel tank or fuel rails, if the alcohol concentration in the fuel tank is high, or if it is used on regular basis. The percentage of alcohol to gasoline inside the tank should not exceed 10%. The good news is, alcohol is also an octane booster. It has a RON octane rating of 110. Adding 10% of alcohol to your fuel tank will likely to boost your total RON rating by a couple of RON points.
