So You Are Thinking Of Joining B-School?
Topics: b-school, business school, executive education
With so many different opportunities available to students today, you could be forgiven for being overwhelmed when it comes to making your career choices. With more and more courses being taught at more and more institutions around the world, how do you decide which is right for you? Well, if you have a head for business and dream of climbing the corporate ladder, enrolling at B-School may well be the right path for you.
Whether you are just starting to further your education, looking for a career change, searching for a course to fast-track your career or simply looking for a new challenge, B-School can open up many doors to aspiring business students. However it’s important to make sure you consider all your options carefully before you complete your enrolment. It’s important to consider where you envisage business school taking you and if it will lead you where you want to go.
Making connections will be a key part to attending B-school, as well as learning how to work with people and learning the fundamentals of business. You need to be happy to network and work in a team. Almost every single assignment will involve group work. In fact, you may well be assigned to a group right at the beginning and most likely stick to that group for your entire course, so being a people person will certainly enhance your experience.
Gaining previous business experience before you attend will help you imagine if it’s a job you could do for the rest of your career. Of course nothing is set in stone and many people will chose to make career changes later on in life, but equally you want to be pretty certain it’s something you are interested in and capable of achieving in, before you get too involved.
Work experience will also assure your school that you already have a basic understanding of the industry and therefore do not need to spoon-feed the basic procedures, that you know what is involved and are committed to making business your career. Most top business schools will in fact require that you have experience prior to being accepted to demonstrate that you have good organizational skills and leadership abilities.
Once you have decided that this is the career for you, you’ll need to consider what area of business you would like to specialise in? Do you like to dabble in accounting and finance? Or perhaps you would be better suited to information technology management, media and entertainment, risk management, global commerce, e-commerce, or human resources.
To determine which is right for you, you’ll need to consider your interests as well as where your talents lie. It’s all well and good being interested in accounting but if you just can’t get to grips with figures, you may be better off turning your skills elsewhere.
Depending on your reason for going back to school, will determine both the course you select and the institution you enrol at. Perhaps you are at the beginning of your career and are looking to provide yourself with additional education required to learn the business ropes. B-Schools are the perfect place to start, well suited to providing you with the challenges you need to succeed. Studying modules such as leadership, decision making, corporate governance, organisational structure, management style, and strategic planning will ensure you are well equipped for your future career.
Perhaps you have already chosen to walk down the business path and are looking to study an MBA to fast-track from your current business role. This is often the case for management consultants for example, where MBA qualifications are second nature. While many of us think we know the right path for us, it’s only once you have started to walk it that you can determine if it was the right one for you. If you realise that you are in the wrong profession and are looking to change your career, b-school is often seen as a great option.
If you are thinking that B-school could be for you, you will need to be dedicated. Usually lasting two years (full-time programs, at least) you need to make sure you can commit that much time to your studies. You’ll also need to be willing to find some serious cash as B-school is expensive unless you get a company to pay for it. Either way, if you have the determination and the drive, then the rest is sure to fall in to place.
